What did Longchen Rabjam actually write and what is the chronology of his writings ? (5)

1.2.3. Conclusion : reasoned inventory of works

It is not possible, in the present state of research, to arrive at a more precise chronology of all the writings of Klong chen rab ’byams. The works will therefore be classified in alphabetical (Tibetan) order of title, with a corresponding number, followed by :

One asterisk for the early period,
Two for the period of

The first two Yang tig (whose elements are given here separately, followed by the reference),
The Theg mchog rin po che'i mdzod
And the Tshig don rin po che'i mdzod[4] ,

Three asterisks for the texts of

The Ngal gso skor gsum,
The Grub mtha' mdzod,
The Yid bzhin rin po che'i mdzod
And the so-called Mun sel skor gsum,

And four for what appear to us to be the last works :

Zab mo yang tig,
Chos dbyings rin po che'i mdzod and its commentary,
gNas lugs rin po che'i mdzod and its commentary)

In many cases, my decision is not based on sufficiently objective criteria and evidence. For example, as I have already said, it is quite intuitively that I place the Rang grol skor gsum at the end of the author's life, because of its affinity in style and content with the Chos dbyings rin po che'i mdzod and the gNas lugs rin po che'i mdzod. In any case, even if the milestones I have laid down should prove to be erroneous, they would at least have the virtue of serving as tentative markers in the thick forest of this very abundant work.

1.2.4. Alphabetical list of the writings of Klong chen rab 'byams

The Inventory of the Treasure of Jewels (with its variants included in the various biographies) remains an interesting object of research; but, as one will have understood, it is not, on the other hand, a relevant working tool. In the following list, I have retained only works that are currently preserved or (in two cases) works that have been lost to date, but whose authenticity is guaranteed by a cross-reference in a preserved and undoubtedly authentic work. [I have not carefully double-checked yet if they have somehow reappeared in the 26-vol. 2009 edition, but it seems to me that it is not the case] I have mentioned only two works that I have not been able to examine personally, namely:

(1) The dKar chag śrī rtags can, which is known to exist only by comparison of our catalog with that found on the TBRC database (Resource Code: W12655[5] );

(2) The mDzod bdun gyi dkar chag (TBRC Resource Code: W12641[6] ). [This text has now become available on TBRC and one can access to it by clicking on the ressource code]

I have also included the Chos 'byung rin po che'i gter mdzod, although opinions are divided about it, leaning very strongly (among Western tibetologists) towards invalidating the attribution to Klong chen rab 'byams. My opinion, though based on only a cursory examination, is that this text is not by Klong chen rab 'byams, despite the authorities (notably 'Jigs med gling pa) cited in support of the attribution in the preface to the modern Chinese edition[7]. Indeed, even a cursory reading of the few paragraphs devoted to the translation of the texts of the rDzogs chen in the royal period reveals a rather aberrant classification of the treatises, or, at least, one that is totally foreign to what is found in all the works of our author. If one adds to this that the author's name in the colophon, rGyal sras Thugs mchog rtsal, is not one of the known pen names of Klong chen rab 'byams, one sees little positive reason to attribute this text to him [It is most probably an altogether different person, connected to the Byang gter]. I leave it in the following inventory only out of consideration for the authority of 'Jigs med gling pa, which deserves at least the benefit of a slight doubt.

As for works that have been somewhat neglected by recent editors of Klong chen rab 'byams' work, after close examination I have included in this list the Triumph over Error (sNga 'gyur rnying ma la rgol ngan log rtog bzlog pa'i bstan bcos) and the Thunderous Rumble of Brahmā's Voice, Synthesis of the Tantras (sNgags spyi don tshangs dbyangs 'brug sgra). The former is much more dubious than the latter, as will be shown below. I have, likewise, included the Tshad ma de kho na nyid bsdus pa, even though reading it in light of the arguments given by Prof. Van Der Kujip (2003) seems to establish inauthenticity perfectly convincingly[8].

[1] 2021: In reality, the matter is more complex, since Klong chen pa seems to have been the "discoverer" or "re-discoverer" of certain parts of the mKha' 'gro snying thig - this is even the only way to make sense of certain colophons, which attribute the discovery to Padma las 'brel rtsal, but with indications of dates which cannot correspond to anything in the life of the "first" Padma las 'brel rtsal. ]

[2] There is a catalog of these Potala collections, but I have not been able to consult it to date. [2021: after the 2009 edition, it can be assumed that there is not much missing from the preserved works that can be attributed with some probability to Klong chen pa. ]

[3] 2121: I also overlooked the volume of texts on gCod (vol. 26 of the 2009 edition), which were inaccessible at the time. A slight skimming once led me to conclude inauthenticity, but the matter should be taken up carefully. ]

[4] Even if nothing assures us that these two texts were composed consecutively, which seems even less likely, Klong chen rab 'byams must have been motivated in writing the second not only by the need to give an abbreviated presentation, concentrated on the necessities of practice, of the essential material of this encyclopedia which is the Theg mchog rin po che'i mdzod, but also by the evolution of his thought on several points.

[8] The author of this article mentions, for example, the use of Sanskrit words transcribed in approximate phonetics in the bodies of the Tshad ma'i de kho na nyid bsdus pa and observes that this is a rare, if not impossible, thing in a fourteenth-century author. We add that this is not found anywhere else in the authentic work of Klong chen rab 'byams. The other stylistic peculiarities pointed out by Van Der Kujip are equally foreign to the manner of the master of Gangs ri thod dkar.

[2] Several works by Klong chen rab 'byams are dedicated to this Rin chen shes rab, about whom nothing is apparently known. A son of Khro bo 'ban, grandson of dPon mGon po rgyal, bears this name; the time might be appropriate.

[3] The composition must be relatively late, given that the author refers to Bu ston, whose works could not be disseminated instantly, even in circles linked to this master, with whom, as we have seen, Klong chen rab 'byams was not without affinities.

[4] One of the two brothers is apparently the Shes rab rin chen to whom a note [n° 2] has been devoted above.

[5] As we have seen, this text cannot be by Klong chen rab 'byams: the style is not his; it presents inconsistencies with other autobiographical texts; and above all, Klong chen pa is called "the master" (bla ma) here and there. Nor is it the clear and simple style of Chos grags bzang po; it is probably written by another direct disciple of Klong chen rab 'byams.

[6] Bad pa'i (which applies to...) would seem more natural than sbas pa'i (hidden) from the point of view of grammar.

[7] Lung in the edition consulted; but the correction is self-evident.

[8] This text of tshad ma does not seem to be by Klong chen rab 'byams despite the traditional attribution. L. van der Kujip has shown that it is not likely.
